Say whatever you want, but I’ve never been one to enjoy a New Year’s Eve “out on the town”. In fact, with the exception of one New Year’s Eve spent in Rome (which truthfully was enough excitement to last me the next 10 years), I have spent every December 31st in the comfort of my own home, stuffing my face and watching movies with my family. To me, that is the best way to celebrate the start of a new year. To make my new years sound even better/more pathetic (you can decide which one), for the past 10 years, we have actually watched the same movie – Moonstruck. Now many of you might be scratching your head at that movie title, and I wouldn’t be surprised. This movie is actually 23 years old, but, with the exception of the 80’s clothing and hairstyles, it is timeless. Not only are the acting and story line incredible (I mean, Cher and a young Nicholas Cage?? What more could you ask for?), but so are the food shots. One particular dish from the film has even made its way into new year’s celebration tradition – egg in bread. I realize that this isn’t really much of a recipe, but I given the recent start of the new year and my obvious obsession with eggs, I thought I should share this delicious and easy-to-prepare dish.
- A loaf of French bread
- Eggs
- Butter
- Salt
- Fresh Tomatoes and Basil (optional)
What you need to do:
- Cut out the middle portion of a slice of bread.
- Head the pan and coat the bottom with a slice of butter.
- Place the slices of bread in the frying pan and crack the egg into the hole. Sprinkle salt over the eggs.
- Cook on both sides for about 2-3 minutes per side (assuming you like the egg runny like I do).
- Plate with fresh tomatoes and basil.
- Enjoy!
Some people might wonder “Cut out the middle portion of the bread with what?” and the answer (at least in my house) is a glass. If your bread is small, then a juice glass I guess
I don’t use french bread, I use any good sandwich bread and if the bread happens to be kind of large – I like that!
I also put the little round piece that I’ve cut out in the frying pan to toast.
This is my sister’s favorite Sunday breakfast….but we grew up calling them Eggs in a frame! And the little piece you cut out with the juice glass is the best part!
Good point with using a cup to cut it out…I also recommend using a cookie cutter if you want to add some fun shapes to the dish!
As for the name of the dish, I much prefer the name “eggs in a frame”…I think I’ll have to start calling it that!
You made me my first “Egg in Bread” in 2007 and I still eat them today! And yes, that night in Roma has lasted me enough New Year’s excitement till now as well 😛

My mom used to make them when I was younger and I kind of forgot about them til I saw it on your blog. I made them the other day just because and I remembered how good they are! They’re a great little breakfast and I’ll have to make them again.
We called them “cat in the hats” although that name makes very little sense to me now. It’s kind of funny how everyone calls them something different. I’ve kind of settled on the name “eggs in a basket.”

Hmmm. Well given my obsession with Dr. Seuss, I might have to start calling them “cat in the hats”… now I just need to come up with a “One Fish, Two Fish” recipe.
